Shao Ying

Hello everyone!
I am LOW Shao Ying, (卢绍莹/盧紹瑩), a professional classical pianist, piano accompanist, composer, songwriter and music arranger from Singapore. I obtained my Licentiate of the Trinity College of London (LTCL), Fellowship of the Trinity College of London (FTCL) and Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in piano performance under the tutelage of YEO Bee Choo and the late ONG Lip Tat. A graduate of the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred CORTOT in France, I studied piano with the late Annie d’ARCO and the late Julien RIDORET, chamber music with Chantal DEBUCHY and harpsichord with Ilton WJUNISKI. While in Paris, I won prizes at competitions such as 1st prize at the Claude Kahn Competition for piano duet with my twin sister, Shao Suan, 2nd prize at the Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche Competition, and 2nd prize at the International Competition of U.F.A.M. I have also participated in masterclasses by Olivier GARDON in Paris and Nelly BEN-OR in London.
Upon our return to Singapore, Shao Suan and I have performed as soloists numerous times with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestros CHOO Hoey, LIM Yau, LÜ Jia, Darrell ANG and Joshua TAN Kang Ming. We were also soloists with the Singapore Festival Orchestra under Maestro Virginia MARTINEZ, the Hunan Symphony Orchestra (China) under Maestro XIAO Ming, as well as the European Baroque Chamber Ensemble in Porto, Portugal. In 1999, we were honored to be invited by the late former President of Singapore, ONG Teng Cheong, to perform at the Istana for him and his distinguished guests.
As an active piano accompanist, I have collaborated with musicians from all over the world, such as violinists FOO Say Ming and JIN Li, cellists Alexander IVASHKIN, Amit PELED, Nella HUNKINS, SONG Young-Hoon, Erich Oskar HUETTER and Gabriel SCHWABE, flautists Hristo DOBRINOV, Roberto ALVAREZ and JIN Ta, oboists Olivier DOISE, CHENG Yue and HSIEH Wan-Chen, clarinettist Jean JOHNSON, bassoonist Magnus NILSSON, saxophonist Christian WIRTH, horn players Olivier DARBELLAY, Daren ROBBINS, Jamie HERSH and Chris CASTELLANOS (Boston Brass), trombonist Shannon PITTAWAY and Domingo PAGLIUCA (Boston Brass), and tubists Roland SZENTPALI, Brett STEMPLE and Sam PILAFIAN (Boston Brass).
As an avid composer and songwriter, I have written songs for Asian pop singers such as Jolin TSAI, Suzanne HSIAO, and CHEN Yi Yi. My instrumental compositions have also won international awards and they are being performed all over the world. They are also broadcasted on Singapore’s only classical radio station, Symphony 92.4FM.
My joint-recording with Shao Suan of Hong Kong contemporary composer, Kawai SHIU’s Jade Luster for two pianos was featured in his Kawai SHIU Streams and Seasons CD, released in December 2010. We also recorded Camille SAINT-SAËNS’ Carnival of the Animals with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Lan SHUI, and this CD was released in July 2012. In August 2014, our debut instrumental album, Romance in the City, featuring our original compositions, was released in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong under the Chinese label, Rhymoi. This album received the “2014 Artistic Performance Album of the Year” award at the 10th Hi-Fi Album Awards 2014 in Guangzhou, China. We launched our second album, Music Diaries, in January 2016.
In 2015, I was invited to be one of 4 mentors and also part of 50 pianists together with superstar pianist, Lang Lang, for the Sing50 concert at the Singapore Sports Hub to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday.
I am a full member of the Composers And Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS). I am co-founder of the inaugural Singapore Asian Composers Festival 2015, and also co-founder of a newly-formed chamber group, Ensemble de la Belle Musique. I have also been a judge for Symphony 92.4FM’s Young Talent’s Project since 2012.
