Shao Suan

Hello there!
I am LOW Shao Suan (卢绍璇/盧紹璇), a classically-trained pianist and accompanist, songwriter and self-taught composer. I obtained my Licentiate of the Trinity College of London (LTCL) and Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) in piano performance, and Fellowship of the Trinity College of London (FTCL) in piano accompanying under the tutelage of Mdm YEO Bee Choo and Mr. Benjamin LOH. A graduate of the famed École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred CORTOT in France, I have studied piano with the late Mdm Annie d’ARCO and the late Mr. Julien RIDORET, chamber music with Mdm Chantal DEBUCHY and harpsichord with Mr. Ilton WJUNISKI. While in Paris, I won prizes at competitions such as 1st prize at the Claude Kahn Competition for Piano Duet together with my twin sister, Shao Ying, 1st prize at the Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche Competition, and 3rd prize at the International Competition of U.F.A.M. I have also participated in masterclasses by Olivier GARDON in Paris and Nelly BEN-OR in London.
Upon our return to Singapore, Shao Ying and I have performed as soloists numerous times with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestros CHOO Hoey, LIM Yau, LÜ Jia, Darrell ANG and Joshua TAN Kang Ming. We were also soloists with the Singapore Festival Orchestra under Maestro Virginia MARTINEZ, the Hunan Symphony Orchestra (China) under Maestro XIAO Ming, as well as the European Baroque Chamber Ensemble in Porto, Portugal. In 1999, both Shao Ying and I were honored to be invited by the late former President of Singapore, ONG Teng Cheong, to perform at the Istana for him and his distinguished guests.
As an active piano accompanist, I have collaborated with musicians from all over the world, such as violinists SIOW Lee-Chin, Alexander SOUPTEL, Takaya URAKAWA and JIN Li, cellists CHAN Wei Shing and SONG Woon Teng, flautists José-Daniel CASTELLON, JIN Ta, Felix RENGGLI, Davide FORMISANO, Marc GRAUWELS, Roberto ALVAREZ and the late Wolfgang SCHULZ, clarinetist Arnaud LEROY, saxophonists Claude DELANGLE and Christian WIRTH, horn virtuoso Olivier DARBELLAY, trumpetists Joe BURGSTALLER, Adam RAPA, William THEIS and Laurence GARGEN, trombonists Marques YOUNG, Allen MEEK, Shannon PITTAWAY, Jörgen van RIJEN, Zachary BOND, Samuel ARMSTRONG, Kevin THOMPSON and Fredi SONDEREGGER, and tubists Øystein BAADSVIK, Roland SZENTPALI, Brett STEMPLE, Steve ROSSE and Tim BUZBEE. I was also the rehearsal pianist for world-renowned violinist, Sarah CHANG, in 2003.
As an avid composer and songwriter, I have written songs for Asian pop singers such as Vivian HSU, CHEN Yi Yi and Mink. A few of my instrumental compositions such as Morning Blues for violin and piano and Souvenirs de Paris for two pianos were finalists at a number of international songwriting competitions. My works have won international awards and have been performed in countries such as Singapore, China, South Korea, Taiwan, Austria, Brazil, Italy and the United States. My music is frequently aired on local classical radio station, Symphony 92.4 FM.
My joint recording with Shao Ying of Hong Kong contemporary composer, Kawai SHIU’s Jade Luster for two pianos was featured in his Kawai SHIU Streams and Seasons CD, released in December 2010. We have also recorded Camille SAINT-SAËNS’ Carnival of the Animals with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Lan SHUI, and this CD was released in July 2012. My performance of Singaporean composer, TAN Chan Boon’s Osinatissimo op. 31 with violinist, LIM Shue Churn, was featured in his Tan Chan Boon : symphony no.2 “Genese” in F# minor (1989-1995) CD, released in 2000. In August 2014, together with Shao Ying, our joint debut instrumental album, Romance in the City, featuring our original compositions, was released in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong under the Chinese label, Rhymoi. This album received the “2014 Artistic Performance Album of the Year” award at the 10th Hi-Fi Album Awards 2014 in Guangzhou, China. We launched our second album, Music Diaries, in January 2016. This album can be found at the National Library and is available on iTunes, Amazon Music and Spotify.
I am a published composer with world-renowned Viennese music publisher, Universal Edition, as well as a full member of the Composers And Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS). I am also a co-founder of the local chamber ensemble, Ensemble de la Belle Musique.
